Optimization of images at the webpages

I have noticed that many times the images on websites are not optimized. I think web developers always overlook this important point as far as search engine optimization is concerned. In my opinion there is lot of stuff written about the SEO and all positives and negatives of search engine optimizations are there at the net, tones of information are available. But still I can find web pages without properly optimized images. In this regards, it make sense to write few notes about the image optimization and its benefits to reader of my blog.

Remember, beside Meta tags and title tags, optimization of images is also the overlooked part of the on-page optimization. Make note of few benefits of properly optimized images at your web page:

Will reduce loading time noticeably,
Search engine will send you more visitors via image searches,
Optimized images can attract more visitors to your web page.

Now, how to achieve this, please read following paragraphs:

Reduce the size of the images, if you have loaded relatively large size of images at the web pages, in fact it will increase the browser loading time, and consequently reduce the visitors. So it is important to reduce size of the image.

But there is another point to note that when you reduce the size of an image it will loose its quality and it is another negative factor for your website. Now if we reduce the size images are loosing its quality and if we keep original size then the page loading time is increased. To overcome this situation, experts are advising that convert images into thumbnails and load at page, then upload your original images at online directory of your site. Integrate rollover link at the thumbnails or put text link under respective images to the original graphics, like “Click to View Enlarged Image” etc.

Another factor I noticed that the images names are not properly assigned. Many images on WebPages are named as image-1.jpg, 123.jpg etc. If images at you site web pages are named like this then change these names, like if the image is of car change it to car.jpg, and it is Toyota car then rename it Toyotacar.jpg etc. Doing so, images with proper names, will help search engines determining the type of contents and specifically the image searches.

Third important factor is the ALT tags; all images should include short alt text that describes the image. Alt tags helps search engine spiders understand what your image is about, which will help them to understand the context of your page better, and in turn gives you more targeted organic traffic via search and image search.

Another very important factor which should be avoided is Putting Text in Images. Yes at some occasions where text in an image is necessary like headers, but in general it should be avoided at all costs. It’s best to have the text actually readable by both the search engine and screen readers. To avoid this use CSS, create graphics without text and write text using CSS, and then make the graphic a background image of the text using CSS.
